A tiny cocktail dress deserves just as much sparkle as a full-size party look, and this strapless fashion doll dress certainly has plenty of it. I paired a bright pink fitted strapless bodice with a shimmering gold sequin skirt to create a playful little statement dress that feels glamorous without being overly formal. The simple silhouette allows the contrasting colours and sparkling textures to become the main attraction, making this a lovely doll outfit for cocktail parties, birthday celebrations, New Year’s Eve scenes, glamorous dollhouse parties, or simply adding something extra sparkly to your doll’s wardrobe.
Choosing Your Sparkly Fabrics
For my dress, I used two different sequin fabrics to give the bodice and skirt their own distinct look. The pink bodice has a finer, closely spaced sequin texture, while the gold skirt features larger sequins that create even more shine and movement. You certainly do not have to recreate the exact pink-and-gold combination. Try silver, rose gold, bronze, champagne, blue, green, lavender, or two contrasting shades of pink. If sequin fabric is not available, you can substitute metallic fabric, glitter fabric, lamé, sparkly stretch fabric, satin, or another lightweight decorative fabric suitable for miniature sewing. Mixing two different fabrics is an especially pretty way to keep the two-piece appearance of the dress.
Made for Barbie-Size & Fashion Dolls
This free sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and other fashion dolls measuring approximately 10.5–11.5 inches tall. Because fashion doll bodies can vary in their bust, waist, and hip measurements, I recommend fitting the dress pieces directly onto your doll as you sew and making small adjustments when necessary. You can access both the complete sewing tutorial and the free printable PDF sewing pattern by clicking the download link at the bottom of this post.
What You’ll Need at Your Sewing Table
This is a small project, so you only need a few basic doll-sewing supplies along with your chosen fabrics. Gather your sequin or sparkly fabric for the bodice and skirt, matching sewing thread, a hand-sewing needle or sewing machine, fabric scissors, straight pins or sewing clips, and a small piece of Velcro for the back closure. A measuring tape can also be helpful when checking the fit on your doll. Since sequins can make tiny seams a little more challenging to work with, take your time around bulky areas and trim away individual sequins from the seam allowance when needed.
