It simply beautiful thing when you find a doll dress that needs very little embellishment because the fabric creates all the drama on its own. This Glitter Fabric Princess Gown has that exact look, with a simple strapless fitted bodice flowing into a wonderfully full floor-length skirt. The sparkling pink fabric catches the light from every angle, while the gathered waist gives the skirt plenty of volume and creates that dreamy princess-ball-gown silhouette. I love how glamorous this dress looks while still having a relatively uncomplicated design that allows the shape and texture of the fabric to become the main attraction.
Choosing Your Glitter Fabric
For this gown, I used a beautiful pink glitter fabric with a fine all-over sparkle that gives the finished dress its shimmery, almost jewel-like appearance. You can recreate a similar effect with glitter mesh, metallic fabric, sequin fabric, sparkly tulle, glitter organza, or another lightweight special-occasion fabric that has enough softness to form the full skirt. You could also place a sheer glitter or sequin layer over a lightweight satin lining if your chosen fabric is too transparent to use by itself. Try blush pink, rose gold, icy blue, lavender, champagne, mint green, hot pink, or even a rich jewel tone to give the same pattern an entirely different personality.
Doll Size & Your Free Pattern
This sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and other similarly proportioned fashion dolls approximately 10.5 to 11.5 inches tall. Because fashion-doll body shapes can vary slightly, I always recommend fitting the pieces directly onto your doll as you sew and making small adjustments when necessary. The complete sewing tutorial and free printable PDF pattern are available with this project. What You’ll Need to Sew the Gown
You only need a small collection of basic doll-clothes sewing supplies for this project. Gather your chosen glitter or sparkly fabric, coordinating sewing thread, a hand-sewing needle or sewing machine, sharp fabric scissors, straight pins or sewing clips, and a small piece of Velcro for the back closure. A measuring tape or small ruler is also helpful when checking the fit and length against your doll. If you are working with a fabric that frays easily, you may also want your preferred seam-finishing supplies nearby to keep the tiny edges neat as you work.
I hope this little princess gown inspires you to experiment with all those sparkly fabrics that are simply too pretty to leave in the fabric stash.
