A glittering strapless bodice paired with a smooth satin skirt gives this fashion doll dress a playful mix of sparkle and elegance. The fitted top catches the light beautifully, while the simple A-line skirt keeps the silhouette polished and lets the contrasting fabrics stand out. I especially love how easily the personality of this dress can change depending on the colours you choose—pink satin makes it bright and girly, while gold, silver, champagne, blue, lavender, or deeper jewel tones could transform it into a lovely little party, cocktail, or special-occasion dress.
Choosing Fabrics for the Two-Tone Look
For this version, I combined a glitter fabric for the bodice with satin for the skirt, creating a noticeable contrast between texture and shine. Lightweight glitter knit, metallic fabric, fine sequin fabric, glitter tulle layered over another fabric, or sparkly stretch fabric can all work beautifully for the bodice. The satin skirt can also be substituted with charmeuse, lightweight crepe, taffeta, silky polyester, or another smooth fabric with enough drape to create a neat A-line shape. Using two contrasting colours is a fun way to emphasize the separate sections of this simple dress design.
Doll Size & Your Free Pattern Download
This free sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and other fashion dolls approximately 10.5″–11.5″ tall. Because fashion doll bodies can vary slightly in the bust, waist, and hip areas, I recommend fitting the pieces directly onto your doll as you sew and making any small adjustments needed for your preferred fit. The complete sewing tutorial and free PDF sewing pattern are available with this post—simply click on the download link at the bottom of the post to get the pattern and begin making your own version.
What You’ll Need at Your Sewing Table
Gather your glitter or metallic fabric for the bodice, satin or another lightweight fabric for the skirt, matching sewing thread, a hand-sewing needle, fabric scissors, straight pins or sewing clips, and your printed PDF pattern. You may also need a small piece of narrow Velcro or another doll-size closure for the back of the dress. A sewing machine can make the longer seams quicker to complete, but because this is such a tiny project, many of the details can also be carefully sewn by hand.
