The simple little dress is transformed by an oversized gathered shoulder that gives it such a pretty, glamorous fashion look. I made mine using sparkly pink sequin fabric, which makes the gathers especially eye-catching. Essential Supplies for This Project
You only need a small amount of fabric to make this dress, which makes it a lovely project for using some of the pretty fabric scraps left over from larger sewing projects. You will need the free PDF sewing pattern, your chosen fabric, matching thread, a sewing needle, fabric scissors, pins or sewing clips and your sewing machine. You will also need thread and a hand-sewing needle for creating the gathered one-shoulder detail. The dramatic shoulder is made by sewing running stitches through the fabric and gently pulling the thread to gather and bunch the fabric into those beautiful ruffles. Depending on how you would like to finish your dress, you can also use a tiny snap or a small piece of hook-and-loop tape for the back closure.
What Size Fashion Doll Is This Pattern For?
This free sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and other fashion dolls approximately 10.5–11.5 inches tall. Because different fashion dolls can have slightly different bust, waist and hip measurements, I recommend checking the fit on your particular doll as you sew and making any tiny adjustments that may be needed. Doll sewing is very forgiving when it comes to small alterations, and even a tiny change to a seam can make a noticeable difference in the finished fit. Fabric Colour & Pattern Suggestions
There are so many pretty directions you could take this dress! I chose a soft sparkly pink, but it would be gorgeous in blush pink, hot pink, lavender, powder blue, mint green, emerald, champagne, gold, silver or classic black. Sequins are perfect when you want an evening or party dress, while satin or another softly shimmering fabric could create a more elegant version. You certainly don’t have to use a solid fabric either. Imagine this little dress in gingham, tiny bows, narrow stripes, miniature daisies, polka dots, rosebuds or delicate scattered florals. Smaller prints work especially well for doll clothes because they remain in proportion with the doll. I think a tiny rosebud or bow print combined with that oversized gathered shoulder would be especially sweet.
