Polka dots and a full gathered skirt give this little Retro Polka Dot doll dress such a charming retro personality. The fitted strapless bodice keeps the silhouette simple, while the generously gathered skirt creates that classic, slightly flared shape that makes the dress feel playful and feminine. I especially love the combination of soft pink with crisp white and tiny pink polka dots—it has the look of a cheerful vintage party dress while still feeling fresh enough for a modern fashion doll wardrobe.
Choosing Fabric for the Dress
For my version, I paired a smooth pink satin fabric for the bodice with a lightweight white cotton polka-dot fabric for the gathered skirt. The contrast between the subtle shine of the satin and the softer cotton gives the dress a little extra dimension. You can easily substitute the satin with cotton sateen, lightweight taffeta, charmeuse, or another light woven fabric that is easy to handle on such a small scale. For the skirt, quilting cotton, cotton lawn, gingham, tiny floral prints, or other lightweight patterned fabrics would work beautifully. Small-scale prints are particularly lovely for doll clothes because the details stay proportional to the doll.

What You’ll Need at Your Sewing Table
You only need a small collection of basic sewing supplies to make this dress. Gather your chosen bodice and skirt fabrics, matching sewing thread, a hand-sewing needle or sewing machine, sharp fabric scissors, straight pins or sewing clips, and a measuring tape or small ruler. You will also need the free printable PDF pattern, along with a small piece of Velcro or another suitable doll-clothes fastening for the back.
