Playful gingham, tiny blue bows, and a pretty strip of white lace give this fashion doll dress such a charming handmade personality. The red-and-white checked fabric has a cheerful picnic-inspired feel, while the bow print adds another layer of sweetness without making the design too busy. I especially love the contrast created by the delicate lace along the top of the strapless bodice—it softens the bold gingham and gives the finished dress a slightly romantic, cottage-inspired look. The simple fitted bodice and gently flared skirt also make this an adorable everyday doll dress that could easily be styled for a picnic, garden afternoon, dollhouse scene, or casual summer outfit.
Choosing Fabric for Your Doll Dress
I used a lightweight woven gingham fabric printed with little blue bows for this dress. A lightweight cotton or cotton-blend fabric works beautifully for doll clothes because it is easier to fold, stitch, and shape around such a small body without creating too much bulk. If you don’t have bow-print gingham, try traditional gingham, tiny florals, miniature polka dots, strawberries, cherries, rosebuds, or another small-scale print. You can also substitute the white lace with narrow crochet lace, embroidered trim, eyelet trim, or another delicate decorative edging that is appropriately sized for a fashion doll.
Doll Size & Your Free Pattern Download
This free sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and other fashion dolls approximately 10.5–11.5 inches tall. Because fashion doll body shapes can vary, I recommend fitting the pieces against your individual doll as you sew and making small adjustments where necessary. The complete sewing tutorial and printable PDF pattern are available with this project. What You’ll Want in Your Sewing Basket
You only need a small collection of basic sewing supplies for this miniature dress. Gather your lightweight gingham or printed cotton fabric, a narrow piece of lace or decorative trim, coordinating sewing thread, a hand-sewing needle or sewing machine, small sharp fabric scissors, straight pins or sewing clips, and a measuring tape or small ruler. You’ll also need a small piece of thin hook-and-loop tape or velcro for the back closure. A fabric marking pencil or disappearing fabric pen can be helpful for transferring placement marks without leaving permanent lines on your finished dress.
I hope this little gingham-and-lace dress becomes another fun piece to add to your doll’s handmade wardrobe.
