Textured tweed, delicate pearls, and a simple fitted silhouette give this fashion doll dress its wonderfully polished little couture look. I especially love how the multicoloured threads woven throughout the fabric make the dress interesting without needing a complicated design. The fitted strapless bodice flows into a softly shaped skirt, while pearl trimming around the neckline and hem frames the entire dress and gives it that extra-special finish. It is the kind of doll dress that could be styled for an elegant luncheon, afternoon tea, fashion show, dinner party, or simply displayed as a beautiful addition to a doll wardrobe.
Fabric Used & Fabric Substitutions
I used a textured tweed/bouclé-style fabric for this dress, with a mixture of pink, coral, cream, black, and metallic threads woven throughout. Tweed is especially beautiful for miniature fashion because all those tiny threads and textures become part of the design. If you don’t have tweed, you can substitute it with bouclé, lightweight upholstery fabric, textured woven fabric, soft suiting, jacquard, or another medium-weight non-stretch fabric that will hold the shape of the dress. You can also experiment with pastel pink, baby blue, lavender, mint, cream, black-and-white, or brightly coloured tweeds and finish them with pearl, beaded, braided, or metallic trimming for completely different versions of the same pattern.
What Size Doll Is This Pattern For?
This free sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and other fashion dolls approximately 10.5–11.5 inches tall. Since fashion dolls can have slightly different bust, waist, and hip measurements, fit the dress on your particular doll as you sew and make small adjustments where necessary. The complete sewing tutorial and free PDF sewing pattern are available with this post. Essential Sewing Supplies
For this project, you will need your chosen tweed or textured fabric, matching sewing thread, a hand-sewing needle and/or sewing machine, fabric scissors, pins or sewing clips, and a small piece of narrow Velcro or another miniature closure for the back of the dress. You will also need decorative pearl trim to recreate the finished look shown here. Because doll clothes involve very small pieces and narrow seam allowances, a fine hand-sewing needle, small sharp scissors, and plenty of pins can make the construction much easier. A seam ripper is also useful for correcting those tiny stitches without damaging your fabric.
