Casual Denim & Striped Dots Summer Fashion Doll Dress Tutorial & Free Sewing Pattern

Casual doll clothes can be just as charming as the fancy gowns, and this little summer dress has such a sweet, easygoing feel. I love the combination of the dark denim bodice with the soft blue-and-white striped dotted skirt. The simple strapless top and A-line skirt give the dress a clean silhouette, while the mix of stripes and tiny dots adds a playful touch. It feels like the kind of dress my fashion doll could wear for a sunny afternoon, a casual lunch, a little shopping trip, or simply a pretty everyday outfit.

Mixing Denim With Striped Fabric

For the top of this dress, I used denim, which gives the bodice a little structure and creates a lovely contrast against the lighter skirt. The skirt is made from a blue-and-white striped fabric scattered with tiny blue dots. If you don’t have denim, you could substitute lightweight chambray, cotton twill, cotton, or another medium-weight woven fabric. The striped fabric can also be replaced with gingham, polka dots, florals, tiny novelty prints, or a simple solid cotton. This is an especially fun pattern for using small fabric scraps and experimenting with different fabric combinations.

Made To Fit Barbie-Size Fashion Dolls

I designed this dress for Barbie-size and other fashion dolls approximately 10.5–11.5 inches tall. Since fashion doll bodies can vary slightly in the bust, waist, and hips, I recommend checking the fit on your particular doll as you sew and making tiny adjustments when necessary. I’ve included the tutorial along with my free PDF sewing pattern so you can recreate the dress yourself. What You’ll Want Beside Your Sewing Machine

This is a wonderfully manageable little project that doesn’t require a huge collection of supplies. You’ll need your denim and striped fabric, the printed PDF pattern, coordinating thread, fabric scissors, sewing pins or clips, a hand-sewing needle, and your sewing machine. You’ll also want a small piece of thin Velcro or another doll-sized closure for the back of the dress. A small iron can be useful for pressing the fabric and seams neatly as you work, although extra care should always be taken when pressing such tiny pieces.

Once you’ve made this casual little denim and striped dress, have a look around the rest of the blog for even more outfits to add to your doll’s wardrobe.
