Free PDF Sewing Pattern & Tutorial – One-Strap Princess Gown for Fashion Dolls

This One-Strap Princess Gown for Fashion Dolls is one of those doll sewing projects that feels wonderfully glamorous once it all comes together. The fitted bodice, single shoulder strap, gathered waist, and long flowing skirt create a beautiful formal silhouette that looks lovely displayed in a dollhouse wardrobe or dressed on a favourite fashion doll. My love of dolls has grown into such a fun little world of dollhouses, miniature fashion, sewing, crochet, and creating tiny pieces that feel like real clothing. I especially love seeing a piece of fabric transform into a miniature gown that gives a doll her own unique style and personality.

Essential Supplies for This Project

You only need a few basic sewing supplies to make this gown. Start with the free PDF sewing pattern, your chosen fabric, matching sewing thread, fabric scissors, pins or sewing clips, a hand-sewing needle, and your sewing machine. You will also need a small piece of hook-and-loop tape or tiny snaps to create an easy back closure. Lightweight lining fabric can be used for the bodice if you would like an extra-neat finish. If you decide to recreate the sparkly look of my gown with sequin fabric, I recommend sewing slowly and carefully around the sequins, especially when working with the tiny bodice and strap pieces.

What Size Fashion Doll Is This Pattern For?

This free doll clothes sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and similar fashion dolls approximately 10.5–11.5 inches tall. Because fashion doll body shapes can vary slightly from one doll to another, I recommend checking the fit of the bodice around your particular doll before completing the back closure. The pattern includes the pieces needed to create the bodice, one shoulder strap, and full skirt. Fabric Colours & Pattern Suggestions

This gown is a wonderful opportunity to have fun with beautiful fabrics and colours. I made mine in gorgeous shades of pink and hot pink sequins, which give it a sparkling princess and evening-gown look, but there are so many other possibilities. Try blush pink, baby blue, lavender, mint green, champagne, gold, silver, deep rose, or even a dramatic jewel tone. For something softer and more whimsical, you could use fabric printed with tiny rosebuds, miniature bows, daisies, polka dots, gingham, delicate stripes, or scattered florals. Satin and taffeta would create a more traditional formal gown, while glitter tulle layered over a coordinating lining could make the skirt feel especially dreamy. You could even mix fabrics by making the bodice in one colour or texture and the full gathered skirt in another.
