Free Sewing Pattern & Tutorial – Off-Shoulder Princess Fashion Doll Dress

I get so excited when I’m creating my tiny wardrobe for fashion dolls. Especially when I can turn scraps of pretty fabric, sequins and trims into a completely new little outfit. My love of dolls goes far beyond simply collecting them—I love dollhouses, miniature decorating and, of course, doll fashion. Designing and sewing tiny clothes gives me another way to combine all of these interests. This Off-Shoulder Princess Fashion Doll Dress is one of my sparkly creations, featuring a wide satin off-shoulder neckline, a fitted bodice and a pretty flared skirt decorated with lots of tiny sparkling details. It has just the kind of whimsical, dressed-up look I love for my dolls.

Essential Supplies for This Project

You only need a handful of basic sewing supplies to make this little dress. Start with the free printable PDF sewing pattern, your chosen fabric, matching sewing thread, fabric scissors, pins or clips and a hand-sewing needle or sewing machine. You will also need a small amount of fabric for the wide off-shoulder wrap—I used a smooth satin-like fabric for mine, which gives the neckline that lovely soft princess look. For the back of the dress, you can use a tiny piece of hook-and-loop tape, small snaps or another closure suitable for doll clothing. And then comes my favourite part: the embellishments! Sequins, tiny beads, pearls, rhinestones, decorative cords and pretty trims are all wonderful for turning a simple doll dress into something extra special.

What Size Fashion Doll Is This Pattern For?

This free sewing pattern is designed for fashion dolls approximately 10.5″ to 11.5″ tall. Because fashion doll bodies can vary slightly in their proportions, I recommend checking the fit against your particular doll as you sew, especially before permanently finishing the back closure. The pattern includes the main pieces needed to create the dress: the bodice, skirt and bow/wrap for the off-shoulder neckline. Fabric Colour & Pattern Suggestions

You definitely don’t have to make this princess dress in pink! I think it would be beautiful in blush pink, lavender, powder blue, mint green, cream, champagne, gold or even a rich jewel tone. For a really glamorous version, try satin, sequin fabric, glitter fabric or another fabric with a little shimmer. You could also completely change the personality of the dress with printed fabric. Tiny gingham checks, polka dots, stripes, miniature bows, daisies, rosebuds or delicate florals would all be adorable. You could even mix fabrics by using a printed fabric for the main dress and a coordinating solid satin for the off-shoulder neckline. Small-scale prints tend to work especially nicely for doll clothes because the details remain proportional to the tiny garment.

Make It Your Own

One of the things I enjoy most about sewing doll clothes is how easy it is to make completely different outfits from the same basic pattern. Once you’ve sewn the dress, try decorating the skirt with little rows of pearls, sequins, beads, lace, ribbon or sparkly trim. You could make a sweet floral princess version with tiny rosebuds, a glamorous party version covered in sequins, or an elegant evening version using satin with just a few carefully placed rhinestones. Even changing the off-shoulder wrap to a contrasting colour can give the same pattern an entirely different look. This is also a lovely project for using those beautiful little fabric scraps and trims that are too small for larger sewing projects but far too pretty to throw away.
