This blue fashion doll gown has a dreamy formal aesthetic, with a fitted strapless bodice flowing into a beautifully full floor-length skirt. The embroidered flowers create plenty of texture across the gown, while the little pearl embellishments add just enough elegance and dimension. I love how the soft blue underneath allows the white embroidered lace to stand out—it gives the finished dress a romantic, almost storybook ball-gown look.
Layering Satin With Embellished Lace
For this dress, I used one layer of embellished and embroidered lace over a layer of blue satin fabric. The satin provides the beautiful blue colour and smooth foundation, while the lace layer brings all of the floral embroidery, texture and pearl detailing to the design. If you would like to recreate the gown with different materials, you could substitute the blue satin with charmeuse, lightweight taffeta or another smooth woven fabric. The embroidered lace can also be replaced with floral embroidered tulle, embellished mesh, beaded lace or even a pretty appliqué lace. Changing the colour underneath the lace is an easy way to create completely different versions of the same gown.
Doll Size & Your Free Pattern
This sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size dolls and other fashion dolls approximately 10.5–11.5 inches tall. Because fashion doll body shapes can vary, I recommend fitting the pieces against your particular doll as you sew and making small adjustments when necessary. I created a free PDF sewing pattern and tutorial to help you make your own version of this embroidered gown. The tutorial walks you through putting the dress together, and you can click the download link at the bottom of this post to access the free PDF pattern.
What You’ll Need At Your Sewing Table
Gather your blue satin, embellished embroidered lace, matching thread, fabric scissors, sewing needle, pins or sewing clips, measuring tape and your preferred doll-size closure such as narrow Velcro. A sewing machine can make the main seams quicker, although such a tiny dress can also be carefully sewn by hand. Small sharp scissors are particularly useful when working around embroidered lace motifs, and a fine needle makes it easier to sew through the delicate layers without unnecessarily disturbing the embroidery.
Making This Gown Your Own
One of my favourite things about this pattern is how dramatically the look can change depending on the fabrics you choose. Try pink satin underneath white floral lace for something sweet and romantic, ivory for a bridal-inspired gown, gold for a regal evening look, rose gold for soft glamour or silver for an elegant formal dress. You can also add your own tiny pearls, rhinestones, beads or lace appliqués to areas that need a little more enchantment. Just remember that doll-scale embellishments can become heavy very quickly, so a few thoughtfully placed details can make a beautiful statement.
