A little bit of yarn can become an adorable handmade piece in such a short amount of time, and I love experimenting with different stitches, colours, and designs for my dolls. This Free Fashion Doll Strapless Crochet Top Pattern is a cute little wardrobe basic with a fitted strapless shape and a simple textured design. It is also a lovely small project for practising basic crochet stitches while creating something your dolls can actually wear.
Fashion Doll Strapless Crochet Top
This crochet top is made primarily with double crochet stitches, followed by a contrasting single-crochet border around the top edge. The two ends of the crochet piece are then joined together to create the finished strapless blouse.
You can make the top in one solid colour or use two coordinating colours as I did, with the second colour creating a pretty border around the top.
Crochet Stitches Used
For this pattern, you will need to know:
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
- dc – double crochet
- sl st – slip stitch
You will also need a small amount of yarn, a crochet hook suitable for your yarn, scissors, and a yarn needle for weaving in the ends.
Fashion Doll Strapless Crochet Top Tutorial
Step 1: Create the Foundation Chain
Begin by making a slip knot and placing it on your crochet hook.
Chain 30.
Skip the first 2 chains from the hook.
Step 2: Crochet the First Row
Work 1 double crochet into each chain across the foundation chain until you reach the end of the row.
When you reach the end, chain 2 and turn your work.
Step 3: Crochet the Second Row
Starting in the first stitch after your hook, work 1 double crochet into each stitch across the row.
At the end of the row, chain 2 and turn your work.
Step 4: Continue the Double Crochet Rows
Continue repeating the same sequence:
Double crochet into each stitch across the row, chain 2, and turn.
Keep working back and forth until you have only 2 loops remaining on your crochet hook near the end of the final stitch.
Instead of completing that stitch with your original yarn colour, you will use your second colour to complete the stitch.
Step 5: Change Yarn Colours
With the final 2 loops still on your hook, place the new yarn colour over your hook.
Pull the new yarn through the last 2 loops on your hook. Your colour change is now complete.
Step 6: Add the Contrasting Border
Using your new yarn colour, work 1 single crochet into each stitch all the way across the perimeter/top edge of the blouse.
This creates a neat contrasting crochet border and adds a pretty finishing detail to the strapless neckline.
Step 7: Join the Top Together
Bring the two short ends of the crochet piece together.
Use single crochet stitches to join the two ends together, creating the closed tube shape of the strapless top.
Make sure the top is not twisted before joining the ends.
Step 8: Fasten Off
Once the two ends have been securely joined, fasten off your yarn.
Use a yarn needle or crochet hook to neatly weave in all remaining yarn ends.
Your Fashion Doll Strapless Crochet Top is finished!
Customising Your Fashion Doll Crochet Top
Once you understand the basic construction, this little top can be made in so many different colour combinations. Try soft pink with white trim, baby blue with cream, lavender with pink, green with white, or even a bright multicoloured version. You could also experiment with sparkly, metallic, or variegated yarns to make tiny party tops for your dolls.
Because fashion dolls can have slightly different body shapes, you can also adjust the fit by adding or removing a few chains from the starting chain. Before permanently joining the ends, wrap the crocheted piece around your doll to check the fit and make any necessary adjustments.
