There is something so magical about making a beautiful princess gown in miniature, and this Fashion Doll Princess Gown is definitely one of those doll dresses that makes me smile when I see it finished. The combination of sparkling sequins and soft pink tulle gives it such a pretty, dreamy look, with a fitted bodice, a full floor-length skirt, a delicate double layer of pink tulle along the top of the bodice, and another layer of sheer pink tulle floating over the sequin skirt. My love of dolls has grown into such a wonderful creative world for me because it brings together so many of the things I enjoy—sewing, fashion, tiny details, decorating dollhouses, and creating beautiful little scenes. Designing doll clothes is especially fun because I can experiment with glamorous fabrics and silhouettes on a miniature scale, and this princess gown is a perfect example.
Essential Supplies for This Project
You will need sequin fabric, soft tulle, matching sewing thread, the free PDF sewing pattern, fabric scissors, pins or sewing clips, a hand-sewing needle or sewing machine, and a small doll-size closure such as narrow hook-and-loop tape or tiny snaps. I used pink sequin fabric for the main gown with coordinating pink tulle. The tulle is especially important for this design because it is used in two different ways: a folded double layer creates the pretty sheer border along the top of the bodice, while a larger layer of tulle is placed over the sequin skirt to soften the sparkle and give the gown its floaty princess look. When sewing miniature garments with sequins, work slowly around the seam lines and use small stitches so the finished dress does not become bulky.
What Size Fashion Doll Is This Pattern For?
This free sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and other fashion dolls approximately 10.5″–11.5″ tall. Because fashion doll body shapes can vary slightly, I recommend checking the bodice fit on your particular doll before finishing the back closure. The accompanying tutorial takes you through the gown step by step, including preparing the double-layer tulle neckline, gathering the sequin skirt, adding the sheer tulle skirt overlay, attaching the skirt to the bodice, and finishing the back of the dress. Fabric Colour & Pattern Ideas
Although I made my princess gown in shades of sparkling pink, there are so many beautiful colour combinations you could try. A blush pink sequin gown with pale pink tulle would create a soft romantic look, while powder blue sequins with matching blue tulle would make a lovely fairytale-inspired gown. Mint green, lavender, champagne, rose gold, silver, soft peach, and even rich emerald would also be gorgeous. You could keep the sequin fabric and tulle in the same colour family for an elegant monochromatic dress or combine contrasting shades for something more playful. For a different interpretation of the pattern, try tiny polka dots, miniature gingham, delicate rosebuds, little daisies, bows, or subtle striped fabric for the bodice or underskirt. Just remember that small-scale prints usually work especially well for doll clothing because the pattern remains proportional to the doll.
