This Easy Strapless Fashion Doll Dress is one of those projects that proves doll fashion does not have to be complicated to be pretty! This dress features a simple strapless tube-style bodice with an A-line skirt that gives it a lovely, classic silhouette. I made mine using a gorgeous sparkly pink fabric, which instantly transformed this very simple pattern into a glamorous little party dress. My love of dolls has grown into such a fun creative world for me—from collecting and dressing dolls to decorating my dollhouse and dreaming up tiny fashions to sew and crochet. I really love seeing how different fabrics can completely change the personality of the same little pattern.
Essential Supplies for This Project
You only need a few basic sewing supplies to make this dress. You will need a small piece of fabric, matching sewing thread, fabric scissors, pins or sewing clips, a hand-sewing needle or sewing machine, and a small piece of hook-and-loop tape or tiny snaps for the back closure. You will also need the free PDF sewing pattern for cutting your bodice and A-line skirt pieces. An iron is helpful for pressing the tiny hems and seams as you sew, although you will want to be especially careful when pressing delicate synthetic, metallic, or sparkly fabrics. One of my favourite things about sewing doll clothes is that they require such small amounts of fabric, making projects like this wonderful for using pretty scraps left over from larger sewing projects.
What Size Fashion Doll Is This Dress For?
This free sewing pattern is designed for Barbie-size and similar fashion dolls approximately 10.5 to 11.5 inches tall. Because fashion doll body shapes can vary, you may need to make a tiny adjustment to the fit depending on the doll you are sewing for. The simple strapless construction makes this an especially easy design to adjust. You can access both the free PDF sewing pattern and the complete Easy Strapless Fashion Doll Dress Tutorial by clicking on the download link at the bottom of this post. The tutorial walks you through cutting and preparing the pieces, sewing the strapless bodice, attaching the A-line skirt, finishing the back opening, adding the closure, and completing the tiny hem.
Fabric Colours & Pattern Suggestions
This little dress is such a blank canvas for experimenting with colour! I love the sparkly pink version because it makes the simple silhouette look like a miniature evening or party dress, but you could create completely different looks with blush pink, hot pink, powder blue, lavender, mint green, emerald green, gold, silver, cream, or classic black. You can also have lots of fun with patterned fabrics. Try tiny gingham checks, bows, stripes, daisies, polka dots, rosebuds, miniature florals, hearts, or other small-scale prints that complement the size of the doll. For something dressier, try satin, metallic fabric, glitter fabric, lightweight sequins, or a sparkly mesh. For a sweet everyday version, a lightweight cotton in gingham or a tiny floral print would be adorable. Since the shape of the dress is so simple, the fabric really gets to be the star of the project.
