A sweep of shimmering gold sequins paired with a bright pink bodice gives this fashion doll dress the kind of glamorous look made for a miniature gala. I especially love how the simple strapless bodice allows the dramatic gathered skirt to become the star of the design. The extra fullness through the skirt creates a beautiful ball-gown silhouette that looks elegant without making the construction overly complicated. Whether your doll is headed to a formal dance, an elegant dinner, a red-carpet-inspired event, or simply getting dressed up for a beautiful dollhouse display, this is one of those dresses that instantly feels special.
Choosing Fabric for the Gown
For my dress, I used sequin fabric for both sections, combining a vivid pink sequin fabric for the fitted bodice with champagne-gold sequins for the long gathered skirt. Using two contrasting colours helps define the waist and makes the design much more striking. You certainly don’t have to use sequins, though. Try satin, metallic fabric, glitter tulle, organza, brocade, velvet, or another lightweight special-occasion fabric. You could also pair a solid bodice with a sparkly skirt or reverse the combination. When substituting fabrics, choose something that can gather nicely at the waist so you can keep the lovely fullness of the original skirt.
Doll Size & Your Free Pattern
This Glamorous Gala Dress is designed for Barbie-size and other fashion dolls approximately 10.5–11.5 inches tall. Because fashion doll bodies can vary slightly in the bust, waist, and hip areas, fit the dress pieces directly on your doll as you sew and make small adjustments where necessary. What You’ll Need at Your Sewing Table
You only need a small collection of sewing supplies to recreate this glamorous little gown. Gather your chosen fabric for the bodice and skirt, matching thread, a hand-sewing needle, fabric scissors, straight pins or sewing clips, and a measuring tape or small ruler. You’ll also need a small piece of Velcro or another suitable doll-clothing closure for the back of the dress. If you’re working with sequin fabric, a fine, sharp needle can make sewing through the fabric easier. Keep your fashion doll nearby while you work so you can regularly check the fit before permanently stitching the dress together.
