Barbie Deluxe Style Doll #16 Review

I am always excited to add another beautiful doll to my collection, but Barbie Deluxe Style Doll #16 immediately caught my attention because she combines several things I love in a fashion doll: gorgeous hair, a pretty face, a curvy body type and, of course, lots of pink! The Deluxe Style collection is designed around glamorous fashions and accessories, and Doll #16 comes dressed in a glossy pink skirt with a black top and coordinating accessories. As someone who loves dolls, dollhouses and making my own doll clothes, I also look at a new doll as more than something to display. I am always imagining the outfits I can sew and crochet for her and how she will look photographed inside my dollhouse.

First Impressions of Barbie Deluxe Style Doll #16

The first thing that stands out about this doll is her overall glamorous appearance. She has a curvy body type and long, wavy brown hair, which gives her a distinctive look within my doll collection. Mattel describes her outfit as being inspired by the Barbiecore aesthetic, and there is certainly no shortage of that signature pink.

I particularly like that she looks fashionable without her outfit being overly complicated. The combination of pink and black gives her a slightly more grown-up fashion-doll appearance, while the shiny skirt keeps everything playful.

She is the type of doll I can imagine displaying in a dollhouse closet, posing beside a miniature dress form or using as a model for one of my handmade fashion-doll sewing patterns.

Her Hair

One of my favourite features is her long brown hair. Mattel describes it as wavy, while retailer descriptions also note the brunette styling.

Long-haired dolls are especially appealing to me because the hair becomes such a large part of their overall look. It also gives you plenty of possibilities for restyling. You could leave her hair down for a softer look or experiment with ponytails, braids and other hairstyles when changing her clothes.

The brown hair also looks beautiful against all that pink and gives the doll a completely different appearance from the blonde Barbie dolls in a collection.

Face and Overall Look

I think she has a very pretty, polished appearance that suits the Deluxe Style line. Her face works particularly well with the darker hair and glamorous clothing.

I also appreciate having dolls with different looks in my collection. When they are placed together inside a dollhouse or photographed wearing handmade fashions, those differences make the scenes much more interesting.

For me, a doll’s face is also important when I am choosing models for doll clothes. I want the finished photographs to feel like miniature fashion photography rather than simply photographs of a toy, and this doll has a look that works beautifully for that.

Her Curvy Body Type

Another feature I really like about Barbie Deluxe Style Doll #16 is her curvy body type. It adds more variety to a doll collection and makes her particularly interesting for someone like me who enjoys designing and making doll clothes.

Different doll body shapes also give me an opportunity to experiment with fit. A blouse, skirt or dress that fits one fashion doll perfectly may need adjustments for another body type. That makes her useful not only as a doll to enjoy, but potentially as another model for experimenting with handmade doll fashions.

If you sew or crochet clothes for your dolls, just remember to check the fit of a pattern for the particular Barbie body type you are using.

The Pink and Black Outfit

Her original outfit is one of the main reasons she earns the Deluxe Style name. Mattel describes it as a glossy pink mini skirt paired with a black satin crop top featuring ribbon details and cap sleeves.

I love the contrast between these two pieces. The shiny pink skirt immediately catches your eye, while the black top prevents the entire outfit from becoming overwhelmingly pink.

The separate top and skirt are another plus for me. Separate pieces are much more fun for doll fashion because you can mix them with other clothes. The black top could be paired with another miniature skirt or trousers, while the pink skirt could look completely different with a handmade blouse or crochet top.

Shoes and Accessories

Of course, a Deluxe Style doll needs accessories!

Doll #16 comes with silver-tone jewellery and a black bow-shaped clutch, while retailer information also shows the look completed with pink shoes and sunglasses.

I particularly like the bow-shaped handbag because accessories such as miniature purses add so much personality to doll displays. They are also wonderful for decorating a dollhouse closet. Rather than keeping every accessory packed away, I like the idea of displaying little bags and shoes on shelves just as you would in a real dressing room.

The metallic jewellery adds another small glamorous detail without competing with the statement pink skirt.

Articulation and Posing

One feature I am very pleased to see is that this doll has bendable joints for posing. Mattel specifically highlights her ability to strike different poses.

That is particularly useful if you enjoy doll photography or creating dollhouse scenes. Instead of every doll having to stand stiffly in exactly the same position, articulation gives you more freedom to create natural-looking poses.

I can imagine her standing in my dollhouse closet choosing an outfit, posing beside one of the dress forms or modelling a new dress that I have sewn.

Using Her as a Doll Clothes Model

This is where dolls become especially fun for me.

I don’t only want to collect beautiful dolls—I want to make things for them. Sewing and crocheting miniature fashions allows me to combine my love of dolls with my love of crafting.

Barbie Deluxe Style Doll #16 would look beautiful in so many handmade styles. I can picture her in little cottage-inspired dresses, off-shoulder blouses, glamorous sequin dresses, crochet tops, tiny skirts and elaborate evening gowns.

Her long brunette hair should also photograph beautifully against lighter fabrics such as blush pink, lavender, pale blue, cream and floral prints. And because she has a curvy body type, she provides another opportunity to explore fitting and designing clothing for different fashion-doll proportions.

Displaying Her in a Dollhouse

I think this doll is particularly suited to dollhouse photography.

The pink-and-black outfit already gives her a strong fashion identity, so she can easily become part of a miniature closet, sewing room, bedroom or dressing-room scene. Add a miniature handbag, flowers, shoes, a dress form and some pretty lighting, and suddenly she becomes part of an entire little world.

That is one of the things I enjoy most about doll collecting. A doll doesn’t have to remain exactly as she came in the box. You can change her clothes, style her hair, create rooms for her and gradually give her an entire miniature wardrobe.

Is Barbie Deluxe Style Doll #16 Worth Adding to a Collection?

For me, this is a lovely addition to a fashion-doll collection, particularly if you enjoy pink fashions, curvy Barbie dolls, long-haired dolls and doll photography.

The Deluxe Style collection is intended for both children and collectors and emphasizes fashion-forward outfits, accessories and posing. Mattel lists Doll #16 with a suggested age of four years and older.

I especially like her potential beyond the original outfit. Once I look at her as a model for sewing and crochet projects, there are so many possibilities. Her original pink-and-black ensemble can go into the dollhouse wardrobe while she gets an entirely new handmade look.
